Samsung Unveils New Home Automation Router

April 24, 2017

Without a good signal for seamless communication, your connected devices may not work as well as you expect. Samsung knows this fact, so they created a new smart Wi-Fi router. The new router not only enhances signal between gadgets but also acts as a SmartThings Hub.

No Hub required

Samsung calls it the Connect Home Smart Wi-Fi System, and it aims to help reduce clutter in your home. You no longer need a separate SmartThings Hub if you have the Connect Router.

The compact Connect Home System has the shape of a square but with rounded edges and a glossy white finish. At the back, it has two Ethernet RJ-45 ports and a power socket. The Connect Home Router can communicate with gadgets through Bluetooth 4.1, Wi-Fi, ZigBee or Z-Wave.

Some in the industry have noted similarities to the Google Wi-Fi or the Eero mostly because it has a range of 1,500 feet. It also offers 512 MB RAM, 4 GB of internal storage, a quad-core 710 MHZ processor, and 2×2 Wi-Fi 802.11ac supports.

The Connect Home router connects to an app that you can use to set up and manage the network in your home. The Samsung Connect app is currently only available on the recently launched Galaxy S8. You can use the app to control and manage Samsung branded smart home devices. That includes SmartThings compatible devices from third-party product makers. For instance, you can use it to control the Netgear Arlo security camera, Philips Hue lights, Roomba, and so on.

When can I get one?

So far, the company has not shared information on the price and availability of the router. What is known is that the router will either be sold on its own or in a three-pack. Selling the router in a three pack supports mesh networking like most other routers in the market. Ideally, you should use one Connect Home router as a central base to broadcast all signals and then use the other two in the pack to extend the network throughout your house.

This mesh network will allow for faster response time for your gadgets, making your home automation system seamless in its operations. Samsung will also offer a Connect Home Pro that will use a faster 1.7GHZ dual-core chip and will support quad-band 80.11ac at a faster 1.7Gps rate.  It will also have the two RJ-45 Ethernet ports on the back including the power socket.

Samsung’s Connect Home Router indicates their targeting people who want most of their home devices to connect and automated. Having one device that can control almost everything in your home and act as a central signal transmitter simplifies home automation.

However, the company still faces a lot of competition from Google, Eero, Luma and other popular router brands like Linksys and Netgear. For more information about home automation routers and to compare products, visit our website today.
