Sonos is known for their collection of Wi-Fi-enabled speakers that allow you to stream music from any source to any room in your house with no loss of audio quality. Sonos products are very popular, not just because they are wireless, but also for their design and the high quality of sound they produce. The only thing they lack is the ability for voice control available on devices like the Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, and Google Home. The PLAYBASE Speaker is the only new product that the company has announced since the launch of the PLAY:5 in 2015.
Brand New Design
According to Sonos engineers, they realized that more than 65 percent of flat-screen TVs were not attached to walls, but sat on furniture. So, they set out creating a product that would not only act as a TV stand but also as a wireless loudspeaker. Sonos already offers a speaker that can mount on the wall below an HDTV, but with the new PLAYBASE, they can increase their TV-speaker market share.
The speaker is 58mm in height, it has a wide flat top that can hold most TVs with screens up to 60 inches and can support TVs that weigh up to 75 pounds. Its thinness and ultra-flat top make it almost unnoticeable when you are watching your favorite shows on TV. Even with its flat design it still manages to deliver excellent sound thanks to its 43,000 individually drilled holes on its grill. It also has an S-port inside that keeps the speaker cool by providing constant airflow.
You can use the Sonos PLAYBASE both as a TV speaker and as a regular Sonos wireless connected music speaker, which means it offers streaming services available for audio. It also means that you can use it together with other Sonos speakers in your home to enjoy multi-room audio.
The speaker comes with an Ethernet plug, a power plug, and an optical audio plug. There are ten amplified speakers inside it, six midranges, three tweeters, and one woofer. Sonos powers all of the speakers by software that controls the sound coming from each transducer.
Built to Last
You don’t have to worry about the speaker rattling inside or vibrating when your TV is sitting on it because it is sturdy and can withstand the weight of your TV for years. Sonos built the PlayBase speaker from scratch, using a complex manufacturing process that involves an insert molding process and a custom-designed polycarbonate exterior filled with glass.
According to Sonos’ CEO Patrick Spence, building the speaker was a great challenge because it forced them to push the boundaries of design, acoustics, materials, software, and wireless technology. In 2016, they announced that they were working on integrating their Sonos speakers with Alexa. Many people expected that this integration would be the first thing they announce this year. Instead, they have launched an entirely new product. Sonos will release the Amazon Alexa enabled feature for PLAYBASE later this year.
