What Exactly is IFTTT?

December 27, 2016

The purpose of automation is to connect all parts of your life together. The most high-functioning parts of your home can work together to operate better and faster with a simple automated setup. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all the small things in your life worked together too? Now they can. Integrated with home automation systems and apps, the IFTTT interface is sure to be your new best friend.

But what is it?

IFTTT, standing for If This Then That, brings all of your automated systems into harmony by making them perform actions in succession to one another. For example, if you have a smart setup in your home, complete with a smart thermostat and Phillips Hue lightbulbs, you can synchronize your lights with certain weather cues. This service is called a “recipe.” If it begins to rain, the IFTTT service will change the color of your smart lightbulbs to whichever color you programmed them to be. The different “recipe” combinations are endless. If you own a Nest Thermostat and an Amazon Echo, you can program Alexa, the voice of the Echo, to change the temperature of your house on command. If your garage door is automated, you can program the lights to come on the moment you arrive at home.

Combining two different smart technologies can make your life easier. Not only does this work with automated technologies in your home, but it also works with apps. Using IFTTT with different apps can connect them with one another, such as Facebook and Twitter. You can set up your posts to appear on many different social media sites, but only if you choose to use the certain “recipe” associated with them. This technology can integrate hundreds of different technologies into your daily routine, giving you the opportunity to relax and not have to remember things on your own so often. And the best part is – it is entirely customizable. You can create recipes to benefit your specific actions. IFTTT provides an easy “shortcut” for your daily activities!
